Just close your eyes and make Bengaluru (formerly Bangalore till 2007) your hometown! Today's middle class India has made things easier to move. I loved my move to Hyderabad, even though it was not my hometown. Most cities have well built social networks that support migrants easily.

Specifically about Bengaluru:- Languagewise, you will have no issues at all as pretty much everything can be managed with English (and Hindi). Learning 200 to 300 words of KannaDa would be more than enough for street communication. If you are beyond the usual stay in closed societies of apartment complexes, use some of the links/info provided below to explore/expand your travel, career, lifestyle, entertainment options.

Climate: Bengaluru is India's highest metro in India in terms of elevation. At an average elevation of 3020 feet above sea level (more t han half a mile above sea level), the weather is bound to be less humid, less 'deserty' and most importantly closest to 'no A/C needed' among all metro areas of India. The weather has deteriorated a lot over the past3 decades, but still there are ample parks, trees and suburban area where you can live a comfortable life.

Growth: Today Bengaluru is India's 3rd richest in terms of per capita PPP income levels after Mumbai & Delhi. It is also India's 4th biggest city in terms of GDP. Growth is stellar and projections for next few years are very bright. From being a sleepy pensioner's paradise in 1970s the growth to become India's 4th largest GDP in 3 decades has been phenomenal. Of course growth comes at a cost to environment & other factors, but that's another discussion.

Language: Ample language opportunities. Karnataka is a state with one of India's highest linguistic diversities. Nearly 3 out of 10 people speak a language other than Kannada at home. In Bengaluru city, that may be as high as 5 out of 10 (no census ever caught this accurately, so only projections). In most middle class areas, you will just be fine. Pick up the latest copy of Deccan Herald and browse through the movies being screened in theaters across the city. You will see English, Kannada, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam for sure. Rarely you may find some more options. It's hard to find multiple theaters (not multiplexes alone) screening 6 language movies in the center of city in India.

Apartments Availability: Your choices are immense. There were literally lakhs of apartments built over the past decade in almost all areas of the city. You can live in upscale villas near Whitefield to middle class apartments near Kanakpura road. Since the city doesn't have any natural barriers for growth like sea or river or mountain, it is growing 360' so to speak.

Did I say the most visited Hindu temple Tirupati is just a 5-6 hours drive?
If you are outgoing, adventurous person, there are lovely places to visit for weekends. Just an overnight travel (5 to 7 hours) from both Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal beaches. Now a days there are literally dozens of resorts just on the outskirts of city, ranging from water parks to rides to tiger/elephant/lion safaris. You name it and you will get it for a 'good' price!

Schools: Refer to the Schools in Bangalore thread. You will find a huge variety of options from international to local schools. I live close to one of the top educational institution. We have so many students from so many parts of India and Africa around our place. It's a Mecca for education & higher studies.

Job Opportunities: Every type of job - small scale (Once Asia's biggest industrial estate - Peenya is within the city now), retail (India's biggest mall opened up this month, in addition to dozens already present), educational/research/government/Public sector (huge list) or high tech (IT, ITES, BPO, Telecom) opportunities are ample. If you are like most here and into IT/ITES, the highest paying jobs are found in research MNCs. In fact 50% of the World's top MNCs, that have a presence in India, have a shop in Bengaluru. Nearly 60% of India's research jobs (100,000 out of 175,000) are in Bengaluru.

So I don't have to tell anything more on job front. Bengaluru beats every other competition for high paying MNC jobs hands down. The recent trends (article above is from June 2009) actually show more businesses making their way into this city from west due to new-found 'Obama & Bangalore buzz'

Connectivity: India's two dream highway projects are Golden Quadrilaterl and NSEW corridor. Both of them pass through Bengaluru. Add to it the fact that India's fastest growing and probably the biggest airlines now - Kingfisher is headquarterd there. A brand new airport is there. So both road & air connectivity is very good to rest of India. Train connectivity is moderately good.

So undoubtedly it is a super cool city. I am not saying there have not been problems or politics, but for an average middle class person without having too much of political inclination, nothing to worry. There is hardly any Indian city that is not susceptible to political induced disturbance/sporadic violence. The possibilities & options on positive scale far outweigh any negative things you see or hear about the city. Just keep in mind that it will be India's 3rd city now after Kolkata & Dilli to get a metro train. The first train leaves later this year itself which could have massive impact on traffic situation over the next couple of years.
